Those that want to market their business online often turn to WordPress Themes for their website.  The question often arises on which is better from a marketing perspective, commercial or free WordPress themes?  The true answer is that it depends on your company and what you are after.  Here are some pros and cons of each so that you can better decide for yourself, which is the better choice.

Commercial Themes
First, let’s discuss the pros of commercial or premium themes.  Premium themes are the themes that you pay for.  Paying for a theme means a number of things.  First less people are likely to have the same theme, unlike a free theme.  Even though most are customizable in order to help them appear unique, commercial themes tend to have more custom features.  This is an advantage to companies looking to stand way out in a crowd.

Next, most commercial themes come with support, meaning if there are bugs and errors you have someone able to assist you.  Many even offer lifetime support.  If you are not tech savvy, then this is a major advantage for premium themes.  Premium themes often offer the most up to date features as well.  There is a lot of competition out there, especially with well-made free themes, so the commercial themes have to work hard to shine.

WordPress commercial and premium themes

The biggest downside to commercial themes is typically the price.  Many wonder why they should pay so much for a theme when there are many quality free versions available.  Premium themes may also be overkill for those looking for more simple websites without all of the bells and whistles.

Free Themes
Free themes also come with a number of pros.  Free themes tend to be built by others for a multitude of reasons such as to enhance their portfolio, gain a name online, or simply for the fun of it all.  Of course the biggest advantage to this option is the fact that they are completely free, meaning you can use your money on other things you company may need for its online marketing campaign.  With more people using free themes, there can also be a lot of community support.  Some claim they find answers to their problems and questions even more quickly this way.  Free themes are a great option for those just starting out, so they can get use to WordPress before investing more.

The downside of free themes is that there is typically very little official support for them.  This means you could spend a great deal of time getting your site to look just right, only to encounter a major glitch and find there is no resolution.  This can mean a lot of valuable time wasted.  These themes tend not to be updated as often as premium ones, and of course the uniqueness factor is less if it is a popular theme.

So how do you decide?  Start by weighing the pros and cons of each against what is important to you and your marketing campaign. It is wise to take some time to look around at the available options before deciding.

  • Are there certain features you would like to have that would make your online marketing campaign easier?
  • Are these features offered with the free versions or only the premium? Do you have enough web savvy to be able to handle the issue that may arise with a free theme, even if they are rare?
  • Are there free themes that meet your needs for functions as well as looks or do the premium options suit your vision better? Just because a theme is commercial doesn’t mean there is a lot of support.
  • Are the themes you are looking at well supported or do they offer some type of guarantee?

Weigh all the pros and cons and find the right answer for you on whether or not a commercial or free WordPress theme is right for your online marketing campaign.
